children reading

Emphasizing the importance of reading is one of the MOST IMPORTANT things parents can do for their children, whether that means reading to children or making daily reading times mandatory.

We teach our kids on how to eat, walk and use the bathroom, as well as how to be safe. We try to coach our kids for almost everything. Why not READING?

Do You Read To Your Kids?
By reading we do not mean that you can read a newspaper or a magazine or a novel. It means being able to read and understand. Without understanding reading is just rote.

Reading is important because it develops the mind. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps them learn to listen.

Education expert Asha Singh Chauhan says “My experience as an Educator, after observing many teachers in many elementary classrooms, I have learnt that the best readers are those students who see their parents reading”

There have been countless studies conducted on The Importance of Parental Involvement in Reading. Research has proved that the most determinant factor of language learning and literacy in children comes from parents who are engaged with their children when it comes to learning to read.

Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. Even after children learn to read by them, it’s still important for you to read aloud together.

When the skills of reading are taught systematically in a manner that utilizes all the learning modes – speaking, seeing, hearing, writing – almost all students are able to learn to read and comprehend (McGuinness, 2005).
As a parent, if you do not take interest in reading to your children, who will then? Somebody Else?

It is a common sense to understand that the children turn brilliant when parents involve more with the child and their reading habits; the more likely they will become better readers. Parents who take an interest in reading activities at home – create positive influences and give reading achievement, language comprehension and expressive language skills.

Experiments proved that the earlier parents who are involved in their children’s reading practices they found profound results and the longer lasting effects later. Parents that introduce their preschool aged children to books and read to them on a daily basis leads to greater reading knowledge and build great confidence in later years.

Good parents understand that participation in child’s learning process is a critical factor when it comes to preparing children to be successful in academics, and in their life.

As a responsible parent you want to provide every benefit that you possibly can for your child’s academic success. But, you should not only know but understand that good reading habits start in home with your involvement and should begin at an early age. Parental participation is the most important factor in helping child with learning needs.

Being said that – Get involved and stay involved with all aspects of your children’s education. Their future achievement depends on your parental involvement.
