Verdict – Asaram Bapu Convicted For Life Imprisonment
The much awaited case of Asaram Bapu is out now. A trial court in Jodhpur held Asaram Bapu guilty of raping a 16 year old girl in August 2013.
Special Judge Madhusudhan Sharma awarded him life imprisonment. Post verdict, the security has been tightened across states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana anticipating violence by Asaram fans.
Ministry of Home Affairs ordered to tighten security in three states by delegating additional forces to maintain law and order at any cost.
Asaram Bapu verdict : The chargesheet
The chargesheet had named four others including Asaram Bapu. They are
Sanchita alias Shilpi,
Sharad Chandra alias Sharat Chandra,
Shiva alias Sava Ram Hethvadiya.
All accused are charged under the POCSO Act, Juvenile Justice Act and the Indian Penal Code. Reportedly Shilpi and Sharad Chandra were sentenced 20 years in jail, while Prakash and Shiva were acquitted.
The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012 was formulated in order to effectively address sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 received the President’s assent on 19th June 2012 and was notified in the Gazette of India on 20th June, 2012.
The Act defines a child as any person below eighteen years of age
The verdict was delivered in the Jodhpur Central Jail as per orders of the Rajasthan High Court. Section 144 has been imposed in the city, preventing assembly of more than four people.
The case file history
A 16-year-old girl had accused Asaram Bapu of violating her on the intervening night of August 15 and 16, 2013 at an ashram in Jodhpur. Following allegation Asaram Bapu was arrested and lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail since 2013. Asaram bapu had 12 bail applications rejected by court till now.
