As the confirmed cases of Covid-19 epidemic rising across the country, people have started abandoning pets in fear, animal activists claim. This has become a significant issue after wildlife authorities in India were asked to stay alert and watch for any sick animal on the road with illness or potential symptoms and reduce animal-human interface.
The fear aroused after a tiger at a zoo in the US tested positive for the disease, putting to rest the reports that animals do not get infected by Covid-19. But that not might be the case, What actually happened?
On April 25th of this year (2020) WcsNewsroom, a media house in USA reported that a Four year old female Malayan tiger had tested positive for Covid-19 and three other tigers and three African lions were showing Covid-19 symptoms.
Samples for testing from these wild animals were collected from their nose, throat and respiratory tract under anaesthesia. Subsequently, all of them tested positive and exhibited a mild cough. This particular testing was done by using a faecal sample test developed by lab experts that does not require the animals be placed under anaesthesia.
The faecal tests confirmed all the big cats had the infection, and also determined that one tiger at Tiger mountain that never developed a cough was also positive for Covid-19.
When this pandemic can swiftly transfer from human to human, you might wonder, if this can happen with animals too. God knows. But dramatically all the animals continue to do well and are alive and behave normally, eating well, and their coughing greatly reduced over the week.
This can be a breakthrough as the tests on tigers and lions will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 and may contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus. The testing of these cats were done in veterinary labs and resources used did not take from those being used for humans.
Can Covid-19 Transmit Through animal?
None of the Zoo’s leopards, cheetahs, and other animals in the proximity of infected animals show signs of any illness. Moreover the news is the said Tigers and Lions were actually infected by a staff person working in zoo who was asymptomatically infected with the virus or before that person developed symptoms.
What Is COVID-19 Disease?
COVID-19 is a disease caused by the coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2. It is believed that the virus was first transferred to people at a food market that trades in wildlife in Wuhan, China. There is no evidence that animals play a role in the transmission of COVID-19 to people other than the initial event in the Wuhan market, and no evidence that any person has been infected with COVID-19 in the US by animals, including by pet dogs or cats.
We will ensure that any knowledge we gain about COVID-19 if transmitted by animals to human will be immediately updated, till then you can relax and take good care of your pet.
