Gururaja, the upcoming Indian athlete, a weight lifter from Chitturu of Karnataka bagged a silver medal in the men’s 56kg on first day of game at 2018 Common Wealth Games.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXI Commonwealth Games and popularly called as Gold Coast 2018, is an international multi-sport affair for members of the Commonwealth that is presently being held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, between 4 and 15 April 2018. This is the 5th time Australia is hosting the GoldCoast event.
Gururaja changed his interest from wrestling to weightlifting when he saw Sushil Kumar winning gold in CommonWealthGames in the year 2010. He desired to win Gold Medal and repeat the achievement like sushil in Olympics.
The 25-year-old Gururaja had tough moment when he failed his first two attempts. He had to make the final attempt at 138 or he would stand in the last position with snatch lift of 111kg against his name. Though his aim for Gold fell short he managed to get silver medal.
Gururaja, took up weightlifting only in 2010 under coach Rajendra Prasad. He blamed the absence of a physio in the warm-up hall for a loose back up as he has a small niggles in back and left knee. He got instructions over the phone but that did’nt help.
His goal now is to perform the Asian Games and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
